Fort Linwell
In 2018 we decided to sell everything we had in the States and move to the Caribbean island of Roatán, Honduras. The home we bought was located on the far east side of the island, in a large natural harbor known as Port Royal, away from the bustling tourist areas and cruise ship docks. It had three acres of ocean front land, the most incredible views you could imagine, and was only accessible by boat. This harbor was used for centuries by pirates and British and Spanish forces during the colonial period, and the top of our hill once held a canon emplacement that guarded one entrance into Port Royal. From this history we decided to name the place "Fort Linwell".
Port Royal is remote, and that’s what we were looking for. The mile long reef enclosed harbor only has about 8 homes and two small private islands, virtually no development, plus all of these back up to the Port Royal National Park.
Our home was off-grid, fresh water from a well and power from the sun. Our plans included adding another casita or two, it already had one, and create a small eco-lodge. Business and family pulled us back to Charlotte just a short time after we moved there, but we enjoyed the property for many years, until selling it in May 2025. This place, and the people we met there - both Honduran / Islanders, and Ex-Pats - really left a lasting impression on us and left us changed forever.
